LONDON — Britain has warned of the abduction of
Westerners in Morocco.

The British Foreign Office said Morocco contains what it termed a
“general threat from terrorism.” The office said the threat was sustained
amid French air strikes on Mali, which sparked warnings of retaliation by Al
Qaida.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by
expatriates and foreign travelers,” the Foreign Office said. “You should
have confidence in your individual security arrangements and maintain a high level of vigilance.”

In a statement on Jan. 25, the British government said it would not
impose restrictions on travel to Morocco. But the advisory warned against the threat of abduction, particularly in remote areas of the North African kingdom.

“You should also be aware that there is a threat of kidnapping in the
immediate and wider regions and particular care should be taken in remote regions and border areas,” the statement said.

Other threats cited by the Foreign Office included violent crime as well
as carjackings. The Foreign Office also said anti-government demonstrations have on occasion sparked riots and looting.

“You should take precautions for your personal safety, avoid political
gatherings and demonstrations and take local advice,” the Foreign Office
said. “Always observe instructions given by the local security authorities.
