Ukraine abruptly called off the long anticipated comprehensive trade deal with the European Union on Nov. 21 for “National Security reasons.”

Meanwhile, Kiev expressed its desire to resume an “active dialogue” with its former foe Russia, whose president Vladimir Putin has been vehemently opposed to Ukraine’s move toward the West in general and the European Union in particular.

Catherine Ashton, a senior EU representative, expressed shock and disbelief over Kiev’s cancellation of the plan, stating that not only was the EU was disappointed by the move, but so were the people of Ukraine.

Ukraine is a strategically important former Soviet republic.
