Moscow and Kiev have finally agreed to a compromise energy deal ending a dispute that had locked the two former Soviet states into a decade-long diplomatic freeze.
Like most western European nations Ukraine relies heavily on Russia’s export of natural gas for heat during winter months.
However, Ukraine complained that Russia charged Kiev more than it does EU countries and refused to pay the rates Moscow demanded.
The bitter dispute led Russia to abruptly cut off gas deliveries to Ukraine during the bitter winters of 2006 and 2009, which affected other EU countries as well.
