U.S. puts China in bind, backs India’s bid for UN Security Council

The U.S. government has announced its support for India’s quest to become a permanent member of the United Nations’ Security Council.

The statement was included in a joint declaration with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has become something of a star on the international geopolitical stage.

With a fast growing economy, vibrant democracy, free press, expanding middle class, English-speaking population, huge market, labor advantage and a strengthened and modernized military force that is nuclear capable, India has become the new Best Friend Forever of the world’s leading powers including the United States.

But for Washington, there is also the nuanced strategic importance of India as a weighty counter-balance against a rising and belligerent China that has territorial disputes with virtually all of its neighbors including India and Japan.
