Tough talk at the Pentagon by a high level visitor interested in buying U.S. tech

Defense Minister Gen. Chang Wanquan has adopted a tough posture while meeting with counterpart Chuck Hagel and other U.S. officials in Washington earlier this week.

Chang’s visit was geared toward fleshing out what Beijing calls “a new type of power relationship” between the world’s two most influential countries.

In unusually blunt language, Chang noted that Beijing expected President Barack Obama’s “rebalancing toward Asia” policy would not hurt China’s interests.

“We hope America’s strategy is not targeted at China or aimed at weakening China,” he told the media after meeting Secretary Hagel.

“The frequency and strength of recent war games held by American forces in the Asia-Pacific Region have ceaselessly increased,” Chang added. “This has to some degree complicated the overall situation in the Asia-Pacific region.” Chang warned that “nobody should underestimate China’s determination to uphold its sovereignty and its oceanic rights.”
