NICOSIA — Hizbullah was said to have sustained heavy losses in
fighting Sunni rebels along the Syrian border with Lebanon.

The Syrian opposition asserted that nearly 100 Hizbullah troops were
killed in the Syrian Army offensive to capture the rebel-held town of
Qusair.

The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 79 Hizbullah fighters were killed in the week-long battle for Qusair, regarded as a Sunni rebel hub near the Syrian border with Lebanon.

“The number of Lebanese Hizbullah fighters killed in recent months in
the outskirts of Damascus and Homs has risen to 141,” Syrian Observatory
said. “That includes 79 fighters killed from the period starting at dawn on
May 19 to dawn on Sunday yesterday, killed by mines, snipers and fighting in
the town of Qusair and its surroundings.”

In a statement on May 27, Syrian Observatory did not provide details of
the Hizbullah casualties. Hizbullah has acknowledged fewer casualties in the
Sunni revolt against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Hizbullah sources said the bloodiest fighting in Qusair took place
on May 25. But the sources said Hizbullah forces were making a steady
advance in the town.
