Mustafa Mughniyeh is the youngest son of ex-operations commander Imad Mughniyeh, who was assassinated in Damascus in 2008. Imad Mughniyeh was suspected in several terrorist attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets, including the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut which killed 63 people, including 17 Americans.

Mughniyeh’s other son, Jihad, was assassinated in January 2015. Jihad, Hizbullah’s commander in the Syrian Golan Heights, was killed when a missile fired by an Israeli helicopter struck his convoy.

The Dec. 29 reports said Hizbullah leaders were refusing to confirm whether Mustafa Mughniyeh was a spy for the CIA and Israel and would not comment on his detention.
