Saudi-led air strikes destroyed the headquarters of former Yemeni President and Houthi ally Ali Abdullah Saleh’s General People’s Congress party on July 5.

The air strikes in Sanaa killed and wounded several people, witnesses and a party official said, according to Reuters. The bombing also came as UN special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Ahmed was visiting Sanaa seeking a humanitarian ceasefire until the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan (around July 17).

Saleh, who resigned amid the “Arab Spring” of 2011, is the top military ally of the Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The Saudi coalition is seeking to restore Yemeni President Abd-Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who is in exile in Riyadh.

General People’s Congress party’s assistant secretary general Faeqa al-Sayed said on the party’s website that the Saudi-led strikes on July 5 were an attempt to make the talks with the UN fail.

“This will not make us back down on our efforts …. to create the suitable environment to cooperate with the United Nations.”

The July 5 strikes also hit the home of Saleh’s nephew and several houses belonging to Houthi supporters in the south and west of Sanaa.

Nearly 3,000 have died in fighting between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis since March.
