On April 15, the rebels, despite a ceasefire agreement, said they captured Bentiu, a city in the oil-rich Wehda state.

The rebels said they were advancing in Wehda and would end operations by foreign energy contractors.

The South Sudan Army has not confirmed the claim but has acknowledged heavy fighting in Wehda.

The Juba government has accused neighboring Sudan of arming the rebels, said to be coordinating with former Vice President Riek Machar.

“Workers of oil companies must pack and leave within a week,” rebel spokesman Lul Ruai Koang said.

“Oil companies face the prospect of halting their operations by force, in addition to risking the safety of their employees in case of failing to comply with this request.”
