Russian hackers are “strongly suspected” of launching a July 25 cyberattack on the Pentagon’s Joint Staff e-mail system, according to U.S. Defense Department officials.

The cyberattack affected about 4,000 Defense Department personnel and took the Joint Staff e-mail system offline for two weeks, officials said.

“The incident bore the hallmark of a state actor,” a Pentagon spokesperson told Fox News on Aug. 6.

The only two “state actors” seen as capable of carrying out such an attack are Russia and China.

An official told Fox News that, while Pentagon officials “strongly suspect” Russia, they cannot make the assumption with 100 percent certainty.

Defense Department officials told NBC News that no classified information had been seized or compromised.

In April, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter put Russia at the top of the suspect list for a breach into an unclassified Defense Department computer network earlier in the year.
