Russian President Dmitri Medvedev threw down the gauntlet of strategic nuclear escalation in Europe last week. Evidently angry over U.S. missile defense deployments in Europe, Medvedev said Moscow would be bolstering its strategic missiles and planning for new deployments of advanced missiles in southern and western Russia.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev: Moscow will "deploy modern offensive weapon systems in the west and south of the country, ensuring our ability to take out any part of the U.S. missile defense system in Europe."

Among the measures he called for are new programs to develop cyber weapons designed to attack missile defense computer networks and guidance systems.

“I have instructed the Armed Forces to draw up measures for disabling missile defense system data and guidance systems, if need be.

“These measures will be adequate, effective, and low cost,” he said.

Other military countermeasures he announced Nov. 23 include:

Placing a missile attack early warning radar station in Kaliningrad on combat alert.

Bolstering the “protective cover” for Russian strategic nuclear weapons and building up both air and space defenses.

Equipping strategic missiles with advanced missile defense-penetrating warheads and other “new highly-effective warheads.”
