Putin’s ‘strategic’ deal with Turkey’s Erdogan could weaken NATO

Beleaguered Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Turkey on Dec. 1 for a carefully planned and hyped state visit.

The goal was to seal a wide range of “strategic deals” with the important NATO ally. Turkey is also the holder of several “chokepoints” to the Black Sea where Russia has displayed unbridled ambition for control and dominance.

The initial protocol label for Putin’s Turkey visit was a mere “working visit,” but was upgraded significantly to the highest diplomatic status of a “state visit” on the eve of Putin’s departure, skipping the next level of protocol status of “official visit.”

Topping the agenda for Putin’s state visit to Turkey was Russia’s export of natural gas to Turkey as was Turkey’s support for Russia’s “stabilizing” presence in Syria and the Black Sea, where Russia claims predominant influence.
