The world’s largest military has not considered bodyweight as a factor for promotion — that is until now.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s departments of General Staff, General Logistics and General Armaments jointly issued a new directive on reforming military and sports training earlier this month. The directive stipulated for the first time that bodyweight could be considered a criteria for promotion within the PLA.
Official Chinese statistics say 95 percent of China’s soldiers are fit enough to meet the standards of the physical readiness test. But many PLA officers are gaining weight at an alarming rate, making them unfit for command.
