North Korea woos Chinese capital to boost infrastructure for tourism, cash

SEOUL — North Korea is seeking Chinese capital to improve its poor infrastructure for tourism, on which it is banking as a much-needed source for hard currency.

North Korea has been building a special tour zone, jointly with China, on its side of Amrok (Yalu) River that flows across the border with China, according to a source here.

China is funding the tour zone project under an agreement in which it takes half of the profits earned from the project, the source said.

When the project gets started, tourists can reach the North’s land zone by boat from the Chinese side of the river without a visa, the source said.
