SEOUL — North Korea has prioritized increasing the rage of its submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) to 2,000 kilometers, a military source here said.
The North is also said to be building 3,000-ton submarines that can carry multiple SLBMs, the source said.
“North Korea is believed to have made efforts to extend the range of its SLMBs to hit U.S. bases on Guam.”
A recent series of high-profile weapons tests including what was said to be a hydrogen bomb test included long-range ballistic missile launches and sea-based exercises.
Moon Keun-Shik, a weapons expert at the Korea Defense and Security Forum, describes sea-borne ballistic missiles as “the most powerful and clandestine weapons tests ever.”
SLBMs are difficult to counter because of their mobility and the underwater stealth factor.
