N. Korea deploys hackers overseas with day jobs as traders, engineers

SEOUL — North Korea’s state-run cyber war operations have expanded hacking attempts on South Korean nuclear power plants, city gas networks, subways and railways, according to intelligence officials and defectors.

The cyber attacks are made by North Korean hackers operating overseas who rout traffic through other nations to hide their origins and tracks.

North Korea has dispatched some 1,000 computer experts to China, Malaysia, Cambodia and Laos in ostensible roles as traders and software engineers, according to Kim In-Jung at the Information Security Institute run by South Korea’s National Intelligence Service.

They are typically involved with websites for illegal gambling and online games to earn foreign currency.
