Multiple Russian intrusions seen as test of NATO warning system

In its most provocative maneuver since the end of the Cold War, Russia dispatched waves of combat aircraft in a bid to penetrate NATO member states’ air space.

No fewer than 26 Russian military aircraft in at least three groups were intercepted by NATO fighters that were scrambled to meet the Russian challenges in a 48-hour period on Oct. 28 and 29.

At least 4 Russian Tu-95 Bear strategic bombers, and 4 Il-78 aerial refueling tanker planes were spotted along coast of Portugal in the early morning hours of Oct. 29 before they turned away while NATO F-16 fighters nearby prepared to intercept and escort them.
