In Modi, Americans find a world leader to get enthusiastic about

He looks like a sophisticated man of the world, talks like a man in charge of the universe, and was received in the U.S. on his maiden state visit like something of a rock star. He is India’s new Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose charm and openness won him many admirers, and not just among Indian-Americans.

The new enthusiasm in the U.S. for Modi and India may have something to do with the profound disappointment of America’s romanticism with other conventional big players in the world.

The end of the Cold War prompted the U.S. to hope for the “peace dividend” and a more democratic Russia. The robust trade with China has led many Americans, elite or average Joe, to wish for a more tolerant and democratic regime in Beijing that respects human rights and freedom.

The disastrous fallout from “Arab Spring”, that had provided much up-beat political rhetoric and triumphalism of science, reason and tolerance over medieval Islamic fundamentalism, has dashed America’s naive good wishes for a better Middle East.
