Lebanon’s education minister said that 1 in 50 Syrian refugees attempting to enter Europe may be terrorists sent by Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

"They (smugglers) organize groups (of jihadists) and send them out.”
Elias Bou Saab: “They (smugglers) organize groups (of jihadists) and send them out.”

“You may have, let’s say, two per cent that are radicals,” said Elias Bou Saab. “That is more than enough.”

He said militants could be going to Europe via Turkey and Greece.

“Yes, they bring some people, the smugglers. They organize groups and send them out.”

Saab made the comments while traveling with British Prime Minister David Cameron on a visit to Lebanon and Jordan.

The Lebanese minister’s comments follow warnings from Pope Francis and UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage that ISIL jihadists could enter Europe hidden among the large numbers of refugees and migrants.

Francis told Portuguese radio station Radio Renascenca: “The truth is that just 400 kilometers from Sicily there is an incredibly cruel terrorist group. So there is a danger of infiltration, this is true.”

Farage wrote on Twitter: “We must establish who is a genuine refugee and to make sure they are not an extremist from ISIS or other jihadi institutions.”
