AMMAN — Jordan has sought to block the flow of Islamist fighters to Syria.

Officials said the government has ordered tightened control over Jordan’s northern border with Syria.

“The government policy seeks to avoid involvement in the Syrian war,” a source said.

On April 22, Jordanian Border Guards captured five men accused of trying to cross into Syria. The detainees, residents of Amman, were said to have sought to join the Sunni revolt.

“They are charged with intent to carry out actions not authorized by the government,” defense attorney Mussa Abdullat said.

Jordan has hosted thousands of Islamists trained to fight the Assad
regime. More than 2,000 Jordanians were said to have been recruited by such
Al Qaida militias as Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Nusra Front for
the Defense of the Levant.

At the same time, Jordan, which captured 40 fighters over the last
month, has been trying suspected Islamist fighters in military courts. The
State Security Court has sentenced more than 30 Islamist defendants to up to
15 years.
