TEL AVIV — Israel’s military has been on alert for continued rocket attacks from Lebanon.

Military sources said Northern Command has been placed on near-maximum readiness for a major strike from Lebanon.

The sources said the military was preparing for rocket strikes or infiltration by Hizbullah or its Sunni-sponsored proxies.

“There is an assessment that Sunni groups, perhaps through Hizbullah guidance, are looking to spark a confrontation with Israel,” a source said.

The sources said an Al Qaida-aligned militia was believed to have acquired medium-range rockets for attacks deep within Israel. They said the Abdullah Azzam Brigades deployed Iranian-origin rockets or missiles with a range of 40 kilometers, able to reach the Israeli city of Haifa.

The Israeli alert contains all arms of the military. The sources said the Air Force and Navy were prepared to respond within minutes to rocket launchings that threaten major Israeli communities.

The sources said Hizbullah might be using Sunni proxies to spark a confrontation with Israel. They said Hizbullah has emerged much stronger from the civil war in Syria and acquired a range of long-range rockets that
could strike every major city in the Jewish state.

“We understand the enemy’s capabilities and we’re able to deal with
everything that they throw at us,” an infantry battalion commander said.

The sources said Israel has also relayed warnings to the Beirut
government to stop any Hizbullah-sponsored strike. They said Lebanon would be held
responsible for any hostilities.
