NICOSIA — A Syrian missile base has been bombed in an attack attributed to Israel.

The Syrian opposition said a Syrian Air Force base in the coastal province of Latakia was bombed on late Oct. 30. The opposition said the rocket attack appeared to come from the Mediterranean Sea.

syria-01“Several explosions were heard in an air defense base in the Snubar Jableh area,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The British-based group, quoting witnesses, said no casualties were reported in the dawn strike. The air defense base was said to contain advanced missiles from Iran and Russia.

This marked the second attack around Snubar over the last three months. In July, the base was struck by unidentified missiles in an operation attributed to Israel.

“The bombing targeted a shipment of surface-to-air missiles that was
headed for Hizbullah in Lebanon,” the Saudi-owned satellite channel Al
Arabiya said of the latest attack.

Hours later, the United States determined that Israel had attacked
Syria. An official of the administration of President Barack Obama said the
strike was conducted by several Israeli fighter-jets.

“Israeli warplanes struck a military base near the Syrian port city of
Latakia this week,” the official told the CNN network on Oct. 31.

The latest attack came hours after reports of Israel Air Force
surveillance missions near Syria. The official Lebanese News Agency said
several Israeli warplanes entered Lebanese air space and flew around the
country for more than three hours.

In mid-October, a Kuwaiti newspaper quoted an Israeli official as
reporting the arrival of a missile shipment for Hizbullah. The newspaper
reported an Israeli air strike against intermediate-range ballistic missiles
sent from Iran.
