Israel building wall along northern border with Lebanon

TEL AVIV — Israel’s military plans to construct a security barrier
along the border with Lebanon.

Officials said the barrier would protect an Israeli community along the
northern border with Lebanon.

Israel has started building a wall along a stretch of its border with Lebanon.

The officials said the barrier would be made of concrete and reach a height of seven meters.

“This would improve the security situation in the region and reduce
tension,” a military spokesman said on April 30.

Officials said the barrier would protect the Israeli border community of Metula, with a population of 1,500. They said Metula has come under sniper fire by Hizbullah and Palestinian operatives.

“In the past year and a half there have been a number of incidents,”
Israel Army Col. Amit Fisher said.

The concrete wall would span more than a kilometer. Officials said the
entire project could be completed by August.

The barrier would also contain electronic sensors, officials said. They
said the sensors could look into Lebanon, particularly Metula’s neighbor,
Kufr Kala.

Metula was a leading target of Hizbullah rocket and automatic fire
during the war with Israel in 2006. Officials said the barrier project has
been coordinated with the Lebanese Army and the United Nations Interim Force
in Lebanon.
