Iraq on Oct. 11 said it carried out an air strike on a convoy carrying Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The Iraqi military also said its air force targeted a meeting site and that several senior ISIL leaders were killed.

Baghdadi’s convoy was said to be en route to the meeting when it was targeted. Iraqi officials said the terror leader was driven away after the strike and that his condition was “unclear.”

The United States military would not comment on the report from Iraq’s military. Baghdadi has survived several attempts on his life since ISIL jihadists swept through northern Iraq last year.

Iraqi officials said the strike took place in the town of Karabla in Anbar province, an ISIL stronghold.

“The location of the meeting was also bombed and many of the group’s leaders were killed and wounded. The fate of murderer al-Baghdadi is unknown and he was carried away by a vehicle. His health condition is still unclear,” the Iraqi military said.

An ISIL fighter reached by telephone said he could not confirm if Baghdadi was in the convoy that was hit.

“Even if he was martyred then it will not affect Islamic State. We will lose a leader but there are a thousand Baghdadis,” the fighter said. “Every minute a leader is born in the Islamic State.”
