Hong Kong protests spawn a greater-China united front in Taiwan, Beijing

As soon as large-scale street protests erupted in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) in late September, Beijing has imposed a news blackout on the so-called “Umbrella Revolution” that is still unfolding on the territorial’s busy streets.

Mainland-Chinese media has carried no reports on the SAR’s Occupy Central movement and the general eruption of “people power.” A black-out has also been imposed on Hong Kong-related broadcasts from CNN and BBC.

There is ample evidence, however, that the extraordinary bravery of Hong Kong citizens has through the social media and other unofficial channels become known to the vast circles of dissidents and intellectuals at least in big Chinese cities.

State-security personnel have arrested at least 40 dissidents who have indicated their support for the Hong Kong democracy movement by means ranging from shaving their heads to holding private discussion groups.
