The simple act of paving a road turned into a case of pure serendipity for Hamas.
The fortunate accident occurred when construction workers paving a road in the Gaza Strip neighborhood of Shujaiyeh unearthed a chest full of Ottoman-era gold coins, Israeli news site Walla reported on Nov. 23.
After the coins were discovered, a fight broke out among local residents over the coins and Hamas police then swooped in and confiscated the booty.
The Walla report said that Gaza City officials announced a halt to all construction work in the neighborhood until an archaeologist could properly inspect the scene.
