Hamas said it fired two rockets toward an Israeli gas installation in the Mediterranean Sea some 35 kilometers from the Gaza Strip.

The area contains a platform from the Tamar field, Israel’s largest producing gas reserve and operated by the U.S. firm Noble Energy.

“It is unclear which platform the Hamas rockets were targeting, or indeed whether they were fired at all,” Simon Henderson, a director at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said.

Israel has not confirmed the attack on Aug. 20. But Henderson said the Hamas threat of continued rocket fire could cause a shutdown of Tamar, meant to supply fuel for 50 percent of Israeli electricity in 2015.
