Gen. Dunford calls Russia’s ‘existential threat’ to U.S. ‘alarming’

Gen. Joseph Dunford, testifying at the confirmation hearing that almost certainly will lead to his Senate approval as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, describes Russia as an “existential threat” and the greatest security challenge to the United States.

“My assessment today, senator, is that Russia presents the greatest threat to our national security….and if you look at their behavior it’s nothing short of alarming.”

In response to congressional questioning, Dunford, the plain-talking Marine Corps commandant, said he would favor providing the Ukrainian government with lethal military assistance, a position decidedly against the Obama administration’s current policies of imposing, along with the European Union, economic sanctions on Russia but little beyond that.

White House Press Spokesman Josh Earnest said Dunford’s views were “personal.”
