EU slaps oil embargo on Iran after months of U.S. pressure

LONDON — The European Union has decided to impose an oil embargo on
Iran.

The 27 foreign ministers of the EU decided that the oil embargo on Iran
would take effect immediately.

The decision would cancel all existing oil
contracts, including fuel and other petroleum products, with Teheran by July.

“I think this shows the resolve of the European Union on this issue,”
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said on Jan. 23.

The EU decision was reached after months of U.S. pressure on Brussels to
block all oil transactions with Teheran. Iran has been a major supplier to
several EU states.
