‘Dark money’ on rise in Russia, average bribe reportedly doubles

Citing an estimate by the Russian Interior Ministry, the nation’s federal law enforcement arm, the pro-government newspaper Izvestiya claims the average bribe this year in Russia is almost double that of last year.

Such estimates are subject to great uncertainty but the price of doing business in Russia through bribes to various government officials for favors or to avoid legal charges has reportedly reached 208,000 rubles, about $3,500.

Transparency International, which compiles a corruption index of nations around the globe, places Russia at a very low 136, just behind Nigeria.

Throughout the Soviet era and since 1991, the post-Soviet era under Presidents Boris Yeltsin, Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin, corruption has been an accepted and endemic part of Russian life.
