A new survey by California’s Chapman University has identified cyberterrorism as one of the American public’s greatest fears, a national security threat that hits home at all levels.
Cyberterrorism occupied a high place on the list of fears, in part, because participants in the survey viewed cyberterrorism as encompassing not only terrorism but cybercrime and cyberwar. Many also viewed cyberterrorism as attacks against national infrastructure such as the health care network, power grid, banks or Wall Street investment houses.
From that perspective a cyber attack could have direct consequences on the lives of most respondents.
The fears expressed in the survey are well-placed. For example, there are highly documented reasons for concerns about the vulnerability of the U.S. national infrastructure.
One of the most feared forms of cyberterrorism against critical infrastructure involves the national power grid.
