The Xi Jinping administration has rolled out a National Security Law which exposes its paranoia about threats to political stability on the one hand, and Beijing’s overarching ambitions about achieving superpower status, on the other.
The Law puts safeguarding “regime security” ahead of ensuring that “sovereignty, national unity, territorial integrity as well as the interests of the population, economy and society” would not be subject to internal and external threats.
While the statute’s wording is extremely vague — apparently to allow the authorities maximum flexibility in defining what actions constitute a threat to the regime — it demonstrates the Xi administration’s fear of so-called infiltration of Western values via the Internet and other channels.
