Brussels post-mortem: NATO’s HQ is hotbed of Islamic radicalism

The successful March 22 terrorist attacks on the Brussels airport and a city subway station add to Europe’s growing list of cities — including Paris, London and Copenhagen — unable to deflect such attacks.

The terrorists appear to have been four young men with Middle Eastern backgrounds who had been living in Belgium. Three are dead.

ISIL claimed responsibility for the attacks which left 31 dead and more than 270 wounded when two blasts shook the airport almost simultaneously and another blast about 75 minutes later struck the subway system.

The tragic events illuminate a series of critical lessons.

1- Brussels is a comfortable home for radicals. Assuming the validity of ISIL’s claim, the attacks underscore what law enforcement and experts have known for years that Brussels, also home to NATO and the European Union headquarters, is a hotbed for Islamic radicalism embedded in several prominent Muslim communities. …
