Beijing’s new policy for Tibet: ‘Winning hearts and minds’ of ordinary people

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) leadership has sought to boost stability in Tibet by vowing to grant more economic benefits for ordinary Tibetans.

Yu Zhengsheng, the Politburo Standing Committee member in charge of both Tibet and Xinjiang, paid a visit to the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) early this month.

“We must speed up development and improve people’s livelihood,” Yu said while touring the region. “We must ensure the prosperity and stability of Tibetan areas.”

A meeting called by the Tibet Party Secretary Chen Quanguo on Aug. 13 revealed more detailed instructions given by Yu, who is also Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, a top-level advisory council.
