Beijing’s hard power push seen stigmatizing nation for ‘imperial overreach’

The Xi Jinping administration’s aggressive power projection in the South China Sea could deal a frontal blow to Beijing’s “peripheral diplomacy,” which is supposed to improve the country’s relations with neighbors in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The Xi leadership has redoubled reclamation efforts in several islets and rocks in the disputed Spratly island chain, which has precipitated condemnations not only from Vietnam and the Philippines but also the United States.

Last week, on April 16, the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven countries issued a statement on maritime security after their meeting in Lubeck, Germany.

In the first G7 document of its kind focusing on the subject, the seven foreign ministers said they “are concerned by any unilateral actions, such as large-scale land reclamation, which change the status quo and increase tensions”.
