Beijing quietly ecstatic that Kerry is shifting U.S. focus back from Asia

The Chinese government has long convinced itself that the best time to achieve parity of power with the U.S. is when the only “hegemon” of the world is geopolitically entangled in quagmires far from East Asia.

So when Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proposed to shift America’s strategic pivot to Asia and vigorously pushed for it, the Chinese came to view her as the most dangerous U.S. politician.

Now power elites across China’s political spectrum are delivering a collective sigh of relief as new Secretary of State John Kerry signals the world that his priority may not be Asia/Pacific after all.

The excitement in Beijing is silent but almost palpable.
