Beijing and Moscow seize the moment at WWII event to trumpet apparent strategic partnership

Chinese President Xi Jinping has formalized his country’s quasi-alliance relationship with Russia by his high-profile participation in counterpart Vladimir Putin’s celebration of the 70th anniversary of the “defeat of Nazism in WWII.”

For the first time ever, a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) honor guard took part in the military parade in Red Square. Western countries with the exception of Greece chose to boycott the session due to Russia’s role in destabilizing Ukraine.

Xi and Putin signed 32 contracts including a $6 billion Chinese loan for the construction of a high-speed rail link in Russia that will use advanced Chinese railway technology.

Beijing also agreed to purchase an additional 30 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, a deal that will help lessen the latter’s dependence on Europe as the most important importer of its energy products.
