Officials said Algeria was drafting plans to train Libya’s military and police. They said training could begin in 2014.

“We are fully prepared to train Libyan military and police personnel to secure their border,” Algerian Prime Minister Abdul Malek Selal said.

Officials said Algeria would focus on helping Libya secure their long joint border.

The officials said Algeria was concerned over the threat by Al Qaida to Libya and Tunisia.

“The deteriorating security situation [in Libya] makes it imperative to double joint efforts to secure their border,” Selal said during a visit on Dec. 29.

The Algerian proposal is said to have included help in counter-insurgency, intelligence and anti-smuggling. Officials said Algeria also offered to train thousands of Libyan police cadets.
