Algeria evacuates oil workers after fire fight near Tunisia border

AlgeriaCAIRO — The Algerian Army has evacuated oil workers amid a threat by Al Qaida.

The army ordered the evacuation of an oil workers complex in the Ouargla province near the border with Tunisia. Security sources said army units battled an Al Qaida-aligned squad near the mountainous border region, deemed a route for Islamic fighters to Tunisia.

Officials said at least two suspected Islamic insurgents were killed near the oil complex. They said the evacuation reflected regulations introduced after the Al Qaida-aligned attack on a liquefied natural gas complex in January 2013.

Western contractors have been developing Algeria’s LNG and other energy assets in Algeria. It was not clear how many oil workers were evacuated from Ouargla or for how long.
