BAGHDAD — Al Qaida has vowed to intensify operations in at least
two Arab states.

Al Qaida has issued warnings of an intensified campaign in Iraq and
Yemen. In separate statements, Al Qaida said the targets would be the
U.S.-backed regime in Sanaa and the Iranian-backed government in Baghdad.

“They will not be secure day or night during Id [Al Fitr] or other times, so they should watch their footsteps and stop the detention campaigns and stop harming Sunni clans,” the Al Qaida-sponsored Islamic State of Iraq and Levant said.

ISIL has claimed responsibility for the bombing offensive in July in which more than 1,000 people were killed. The latest mass-casualty attack took place on Aug. 10 in which nearly 100 people were blown up.

Al Qaida said Iraqi security forces were targeting Sunni tribes in Anbar and other provinces. Baghdad’s crackdown began in wake of Al Qaida’s storming of prisons in which close to 1,000 Islamists were freed.

“They will pay a high price for what they did,” ISIL said.

Al Qaida has also vowed renewed operations in Yemen. Al Qaida in the
Arabian Peninsula said it would attack prisons to free the hundreds of
operatives jailed in a U.S.-directed crackdown in 2013. In July, AQAP staged
at least two prison breaks in Yemen. Al Qaida was also said to have freed
more than 1,000 inmates in a July 27 attack outside the Libyan capital of
Tripoli.

“We ask God to make us a cause for unlocking your incarceration and
relieving your agony,” AQAP commander Nasser Al Wuhayshi said.

In a statement on Aug. 12, Al Wuhayshi, who broke out of prison in 2006,
said AQAP would begin its attacks soon. He did not elaborate.

“Your brothers are pounding the walls of injustice and the thrones of
oppression,” Al Wuhayshi said. “These walls and thrones are coming down
every day, and victory is but one step. Victory is one hour of
perseverance.”
