“The attackers used sophisticated weapons including RPGs and Grinovs [machine gun],” a military source told Egypt’s official Middle East News Agency.

The attack, the worst since August 2013, took place on July 19 in the Wadi Al Jedid province and marked the second time the military post came under fire. Six soldiers were killed in the previous attack in May 2014.

Egyptian Army spokesman Col. Mohammed Samir said many of the soldiers were killed when a munitions depot at the post exploded. Samir said several of the attackers were also killed.

Officials said the attackers arrived in two vehicles packed with ammunition. They said the attackers had planned to ram the vehicles into the Border Guard facility.
