USA Vice Presient Joe Biden backs gendercide
in the People's Republic of China

By Grace Vuoto

Vice President Joe Biden is provoking outrage on his trip to China as he ignores the many victims of China’s one-child policy — especially the disproportionate abortion of girls known as gendercide.

“Your policy has been one which I fully understand — I’m not second-guessing — of one child per family,” he said in addressing the future problem in China of an elderly population that will rely increasingly on the wages of a diminishing youth population. His speech intended to draw a parallel between America’s debate on entitlement reform and China’s future challenges. But the parallel ignores the consequences of the heinous law in China, established since the late 1970s, whereby a family cannot have more than one child in urban areas and not more than two in the countryside if the first is a girl.

House Speaker John Boehner denounced the failure to take a stand against China’s population-control policy. “I’m deeply troubled by the comments reportedly made by the vice president yesterday regarding China’s reprehensible one-child policy, which has resulted in forced sterilizations and coerced abortions and should not be condoned by any American official,” said Mr. Boehner in a statement. “No government on Earth has the authority to place quotas on the value of innocent human life, or to treat life as an economic commodity that can be regulated and taken away on a whim by the state.”

Mr. Boehner is right. Yet, his sentiment is not shared by the Obama administration, which supports international family planning — and also compels American taxpayers to do so. President Obama has reversed key aspects of the George W. Bush administration’s policies that sought to prohibit the use of taxpayer dollars to finance abortions in other countries. Since Mr. Obama assumed office, $105 million has been given to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) despite a 2002 investigation by the State Department that China was using resources given them by UNFPA to implement the one-child policy. The one-child law has resulted in approximately 400 million births that have been “prevented” in China, according to statistics compiled by the Chinese government. Mr. Obama has made Americans complicit in Beijing’s assault of unborn children.

In January 2009, Mr. Obama reversed the Mexico City Policy, instituted by Ronald Reagan in 1984, that prevents American funding of international organizations that provide abortion services. Under the guise of caring for the health of women, some non-governmental agencies facilitate abortion, even in opposition to local laws and customs. At the time, the Vatican condemned the reversal of the ban. Archbishop Rino Fisichella, head of the Pontifical Academy for Life, blasted the measure as “the arrogance of those who, having power, think they can decide between life and death.”

Abortion embodies the ultimate abuse of power: the weakest members of society — the unborn — are exterminated by the stronger. It is no accident that many of abortion’s victims tend to be girls or minorities.

For example, Catholicvote.com launched a U.S. media campaign suggesting that a black child born to a single mother in America could easily be aborted — yet has the potential to become the first African American president. “Imagine the potential” states the ad, featuring a pulsating fetus and then showcasing an image of the president amid background cheers. The implication was obvious: Mr. Obama could have been the victim of the very policies he so callously promotes both at home and abroad. The ad is currently a YouTube sensation, seen by over two million viewers.

The one-child policy in China has resulted in the barbaric practices of coerced abortions by women who want to carry their children to term; the killing of disabled children in the womb and gendercide. Furthermore, the Chinese preference for boys has resulted in an international adoption trade, whereby millions of Chinese girls are adopted by foreigners, perhaps raised in loving homes but still stripped of their culture and homeland. And too bad for all those Chinese boys, proudly born and welcomed into life, but who will face a shortage of women to court and marry in their country when they come of age. Also to be pitied are all the single children who never experience the joy of a sibling.

The depletion of girls will have a long-lasting impact all across Asia, according to a March 4, 2010 article published in The Economist titled “The war on baby girls.” The practice of gendercide has gone well beyond China, affecting northern India, Taiwan, Singapore, the western Balkans and the Caucasus — and even, perhaps most shocking of all, Asian-American communities, where there is an unexplained gender-ratio imbalance. As ultrasounds identify a gender at a very early stage, an abortion can be chosen for no other reason than that the pregnant woman prefers a boy.

In the recent book, “Unnatural Selection: Choosing Boys Over Girls, and the Consequences of a World Full of Men” (Perseus Books Group, 2011), investigative journalist Mara Hvistendahl, estimates that 163 million baby girls who should have been born in the past three decades are missing. She also notes that in societies where there are more men than women, there is likely to be greater violence and also, as a result of the scarcity of women, the outright “buying” of brides or the forcible prostitution of women as a means of making money for a family. Ms. Hvistendahl, a pro-choicer, fears that the information she has uncovered will lead to an even greater outcry against abortion itself. Like most pro-choicers, she wants to have her cake and eat it too: abortion yes, killing girls no. However, as long as abortion is accessible, there is no way to limit the war on baby girls.

Feminists have long lauded abortion as a means of empowering women. Ironically, it is destroying the female population in some nations. This kind of tampering with the most sacred of all gifts — our reproductive capabilities — has consequences that are unintended and unpredictable. This is yet another example of a leftist “utopia” that is transformed into a ghoulish inferno beyond all expectations. Rather than use his platform to spotlight and condemn one of the most glaring human rights abuses of all time, Mr. Biden has given his tacit support to China’s one-child policy and all its barbaric consequences. He may claim to be an enlightened liberal and staunch feminist. However, his actions tell a different story. Beijing’s gendercide is primitive, reactionary and reveals a profound hatred for women. Little girls are being exterminated simply for being girls. Mr. Biden — and Mr. Obama — are the ultimate anti-feminists.
