Turkey pitches Egypt on joint Mediterranean energy project

CAIRO — Egypt and Turkey were examining the prospect of joint energy exploration in the Mediterranean.

Officials said Turkey has sought to recruit Egypt for the exploration of crude oil and natural gas in the eastern Mediterranean. Turkey has expressed opposition to energy exploration in the area by Israel and the Republic of Cyprus.

"Egypt and Turkey can work together on the fields of oil and gas," Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said on Sept. 14.

Yildiz said Ankara and Cairo have conducted an evaluation based on Egypt's ability for deep-water drilling. He said Turkey was considering importing gas from Egypt, which seeks to become a major supplier in the region.
