Kuwait's Supreme Petroleum Council OKs
major refinery project

ABU DHABI — Kuwait has granted final approval to the construction of a major refinery.

Kuwaiti Oil Minister Mohammed Al Busairy reported approval by the Supreme Petroleum Council of a project to construct Al Zour refinery. Al Zour was designed to contain a refinery capacity of 615,000 barrels of oil per day.

Al Zour was designed to contain two phases. The first was meant to build a refinery with a capacity to refine 300,000 barrels per day while the second phase would add another 315,000 barrels.

The council also approved government projects to modernize two of Kuwait's three refineries.

They were identified as Mina Al Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah, with capacities of 466,000 and 270,000 barrels per day, respectively.
