U.S. commander hints foreign missile threats go beyond Iran, N. Korea

The commander of U.S. forces in North America, Adm. James Winnefeld, told Congress last week that several nations are developing the capacity to target North America with ballistic missiles armed with weapons of mass destruction, and called for more robust defenses. Use of the term "several" is a new iteration of the missile threat to the United States since in the past North Korea and Iran were the only nations mentioned specifically as posing long-range missile attack capabilities. The term indicates that the military is likely including China's growing long-range missile forces in its concern over long-range missile threats.
