Kim Jong-Il's promotion of his third son, Kim Jong-Un to the rank of general, along with other promotions, was part of the calculated leadership succession planned for the ailing dictator. The promotion of Jong-Un on Sept. 27 was accompanied by promotions of a larger number of general officers, including Jong-Un’s older sister, the minister of light industry, Kim Kyong-Hui and four others to the rank of general, a four-star rank.
