U.S. calls Awlaki 'active terrorist', Al Qaida in Yemen 'serious threat'
State Department coordinator for counterterrorism Daniel Benjamin last week defended U.S. intelligence and military efforts to capture or kill Yemeni Al Qaida leader Anwar al-Awlaki, who has been linked to the Fort Hood massacre by Maj. Nidal Hassan and the attempted airline bombing near Detroit by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab.
