CAIRO — Tunisia has allowed women to work in the military.
Parliament has endorsed legislation that would enable women to occupy a
range of posts in the military.
Officials said the posts would not include
combat duties.

The legislation was passed on March 25 as part of the Military Services
Act. Officials said women would be allowed to serve the military outside
exclusively-male dominated bases.
Tunisian Defense Minister Reza Garirp acknowledged that the military has
long avoided women recruitment. The minister attributed this to a lack of
infrastructure for women in the military, such as barracks.
"Recruitment will be gradual," Garirp said.
Tunisia, which has a large female workforce, has been regarded as
one of the most modern of Arab League states. The North African state has
one of the smallest militaries in North Africa.
