TEL AVIV — A U.S. company has progressed in its search for crude oil in Israel.

The Dallas-based Zion Oil & Gas has been drilling a well as part of efforts to test for crude oil reserves in Israel, Middle East Newsline reported.

The company, which shares its revenue with Christian and Jewish charities, has reported reaching a depth of 17,913 feet at the Ma’anit-Rehoboth-2 well.

"The drilling operations on our Ma'anit-Rehoboth-2 well are proceeding as planned and are ahead of schedule," Zion chief executive officer Richard Rinberg said.

The drilling was expected to be followed by a velocity survey and other tests. Zion has been allowed to continue drilling Ma'anit until January 2009.
