German firm to certify construction by Chinese of oil pipeline bypassing Straits of Hormuz
LONDON Ñ A European company has been selected to facilitate an oil
pipeline project by the United Arab Emirates.
Germany's Germanischer Lloyd, or GL, was chosen to provide technical
assurance and certification of the 400-kilometer, 48-inch pipeline designed
to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, the world's leading oil shipment passage and
under threat from neighboring Iran.
The pipeline would begin from Habshan in the UAE emirate of Abu Dhabi
and reach the main oil terminal at Fujairah.

The facility was designed for a
capacity of up to 1.5 million barrels of oil per day, or 60 percent of the
UAE's crude oil exports.
Under the contract, GL would conduct inspection during and after
construction. The contract to GL was awarded by Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline
and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corp.
